This week's blog...... 12-03-17

An update sort of blog today, I would have done 3 separate ones, but really they would not have amounted to much individually.

So firstly, on Wednesday it was the 1st Fisho qualifier of the year, at Viaduct, so along with 96 others, we all had fingers crossed that things would fall into place, a few bits of luck and some half sensible fishing could produce a result.
After the usual natterings I plucked peg 74 from the tin, a decent draw, one I felt had a chance should the fish stay down the near end of Cary Lake, but in reality we all knew Campbell was the likely lake to win the day.
Peg 74, Cary Lake.
I had Calum Craig opposite me and Darren Cox on 76.
The match started ok, a couple carp and some skimmers in the first hour from off the edge of the tree to my right.....but then that was it as the fish moved up the lake with Alex Murray on 102 doing ok for a while before 77 and 78 took the lake's honours. I chose not to weigh. Calum had 3 carp I think, 107 had 4 and 109 only 1.
I did get to see Steve Jackson, Gareth Lennox and Frank Domachie catching well most of the day, sharing 400lb between them, with Jacko wining through to the final. Oh and well done to Emma Drysdale for running Mick Bull close down in the narrows in Middle, just being pipped with both having 90lb+.

Saturday saw me head back to Viaduct for Don Sutherland's memorial match, a silvers only event across Spring/Middle, Lodge and Campbell Lakes. 49 fished and a draw on a good peg on Spring would be a first choice.
I managed another reasonable draw, I was told by Vince Brown, with peg 32 on Middle, but arriving on my peg, there were a few carp moving all over but only the odd plip roach and rudd showing on the silvers' front. Hmmm maybe the skimmers and bream had ventured through the gaps to Spring lake?

Peg 32 Middle...
I set up a waggler for corn at 20m or so, a rig for maggots/caster over groundbait at 14m in front and caster over maggot by a tree at 14m to my left. Oh and lastly a 6m rig for caster over caster.
I managed 1 decent skimmer on the waggler but the majority of my fish came on the 14m groundbait line using caster as bait. I had 20lb 2oz, this was 3 skimmers between 1.5lb and 3lb. The rest was roach and rudd plus the odd 6oz skimmer. Luckily I won the section by default, but it was the top weight off Middle Lake and the winner, Mark Saunders was the overall winner with 49lb 8oz from peg 26. That area of the lake, pegs 24 round to peg 5, fished well, and generally Spring fished very well with loads of 20lb+ weights. Campbell and Lodge also produced 29lb+ nets.

Results (1-32 Spring/Middle, 53-73 Lodge, 110-132 Campbell)
1. Mark Saunders - 49lb 8oz - peg 26
2. Stu White - 42lb 9oz - peg 2
3. Gabe Skarba - 39lb 11oz - peg 124...
4. Shawn Kittridge - 39lb 9oz - peg 1
5. Jess Jordon - 33lb 12oz - peg 17
6. Ryan Shipp - 32lb 3oz - peg 19
7. Nigel Easton - 32lb 1oz - peg 115
7. Robin Guy - 32lb 1oz - peg 15
9. Steve Jackson - 30lb 7oz - peg 116
10. Nick Ewers - 30lb - peg 5
11. Roland Lucas - 29lb 6oz - peg 59
12. John Page - 29lb 2oz - peg 64
13. Alvin Jones - 27lb 7oz - peg 3
14. Chris Fox - 24lb 4oz - peg 24
15. Vince Brown - 24lb 2oz - peg 16

Lastly was today's match on the Kings Sedgemoor Drain at Bradney with the Pawlett bunch.
Running late (for me) and arriving with my breakfast in hand, it was a matter of saying my hellos and stuff, some guys fishing whom I haven't seen for ages were present, like Baz Morgan and Dave Nash to name 2.
A look at the water from the bridge and I knew it wasn't going to be a great day in terms of weights as the water looked too coloured and coupled with the warmer weather we have had, I expected it to be a bit of a scratching day. I also said that whoever draws the end bay peg nearest the bridge should win or be chucked in as it looked full of fish including pike. I didn't want to draw in the pegs downstream of the bridge as it is too deep and hasn't been so good on the whole for the last 2 or 3 years.
The draw was made and I went in mid-rabble and pulled 24 (after a bit of faffing between myself and Keith Clapp, I fished peg 24, he had 23...). Jamie Cook and Neil Venning were in the fancied end pegs of the bay. The pegging was 1-10 perma pegs on the South Bank, 11 to 19 in the bay area opposite the EA building and 20 to 24 below the bridge.

My Bradney peg on the KSD.
A waggler was set up, but only had a couple casts as the wind was a pain.
A couple pole rigs, one for 6m on a 0.7g float on 0.12>0.10>20 b511 hook, here I would feed caster and hemp by hand. The 2nd rig was a 2g Drennan Carbo on the same lines but would be fished at 13m over an initial balling of groundbait laced with hemp and caster, 6 big coconut sized balls to be precise.
With very few small fish topping, it was a struggle for the day, just picking up a few fish, mostly roach between 1 and 2oz, a 4oz fish was a bonus. It was just a matter of patience and luck.
The short line only gave me a couple fish as I had no flow here. Throughout the day I kept checking with Keith what he was getting and pretty much the reply was 'not much' or 'nothing more'. Though the 2 pegs nearest the bridge, I was told, were picking up small silvers.

The all-out came at 4:30pm and as the scales arrived below the bridge the top 2 nets were indeed Jamie and Neil from the 2 last pegs in the bay with circa 16lb each. A 9lb net and a few 5lb nets were recorded, none of us admitted to 5lb below the bridge. My 4lb 11oz was the best weight from that stretch. I had between 60 and 70 fish, so on the small size, my largest was maybe 4oz. But not good enough for a pick-up.
The perma pegged section fished a bit better with plenty of 6 to 9lb nets.

Results, top 3 came from the bay areas, top 2 nearest the bridge.
1st, Jamie Cook. 16lb 15oz.
2nd, Neil Venning. 15lb 8oz
3rd, Kev Lock. 9lb 6oz (inc a tench)

Weights....
So a mixed set of results, but I enjoyed them all and this weekend's fishing for silvers.
Not sure where I am fishing next weekend, no set plans. We shall see.
Until then, have fun.

KSD, Bradney. Pawlett Match, 08-03-15.

With the end of the season for rivers and drains almost upon us, Pawlett LAC had a match on the Kings Sedgemoor Drain along the Bradney stretch in Bawdrip.
With 29 due to fish it was pretty popular.

On Saturday, early afternoon, I took a quick look at the drain to see what condition it was in, it was down by a few feet and flowing out with the tide, it looked good. There were several pleasure anglers fishing between the 2 bridges and were catching plenty of roach and small silver bream or hybrids.
I hoped for similar conditions for the match, I didn't really want it to be 'backing up' all day as it tends to fish tricky when it does. Target weight for the day would be around 18lb for a chance of picking up an envelope.

Back to today, I arrived in plenty of time for the draw and was greeted my several guys, some new faces were in attendance, plus a few who only fish with the club occasionally.
We had Baz Morgan and Bruce Hunt in attendance as newbie members, also Martin Heard and Dave Nash made rare turnouts with us.
A lot of chit chat went on about where would be preferred, but the bay area above the bridge, the 1st couple pegs on the permanent pegs past the EA building and the first 3 or 4 pegs below the road bridge were favoured.
The least favoured areas would be those furthest away from the bridge, on the permanent pegs ie pegs 5 to 9.
We had pegs 1 to 9 on the perma pegs, 10 to 19 on the downstream pegs towards the footbridge and 20 to 29 were pegged on the north bank opposite the EA building.

As usual I waited until near the end of the queue at the draw and with 3 left in the tub, 2 bay pegs and peg 9, I really didn't want peg 9, the furthest walk. I drew peg 9..!!
I made the comfortable walk along the footpath to my peg, most of the anglers I passed wished my luck as it wasn't a 'wanted' peg.
For company I found that peg 8 was taken by Barry Morgan, that's the only other angler I could see. But I knew I'd have my work cut out to better Barry's weight, he's not a bad fisherman.

Looking downstream to Barry Morgan on peg 8, Bradney. Ksd.
I began to set my gear up, which was a feeder rod that other than 2 five minute spells while I had a cuppa, remained unused.
A 3aaa waggler rod, a couple of topkits for the pole, one with tench in mind at 6m in the 10am direction, and the other for small fish at 13m in front.
Lastly 2 whips were assembled, a 4.5m with a 4x18 float on to fish on the deck (unused) and a 4m whip with a 4x14 float to fish off bottom.

For bait I had 2kg of groundbait, 3 pints of hemp, 2pts of caster and some maggots just in case, lastly I had a few grains of corn for a change bait and to try and temp the tench!!
At the all in I balled 8 big jaffas of groundbait on the long pole line and threw some hemp/caster on the whip line.

View of peg 9, KSD Bradney.
I chucked the feeder out for 5 minutes while I had a cup of tea, as the water was stationary things didn't look too fishy, the water was clear too.
Once I had drank my tea I tried the waggler, I kept feeding the whip lines and threw the odd few bits of corn over where I hoped for a tinca.
The first 90 minutes of the match, while the water was still, was a struggle for me and Barry, I had a chunky perch of 5oz and a couple 3oz roach.

Once 12pm arrived, the drain started to trickle along from right to left, so I tried the whip and had a 3oz roach right away, another soon followed. This was the pattern for the rest of the match, though occasionally I did go out on the long pole line as to rest the whip swim, the pole line gave me a bite a chuck, but wouldn't be quick enough at that distance to build a weight.
While fishing the whip I shallowed up and down during the match and this managed to trick a nice rudd of around 1lb.
I didn't feed any groundbait on the whip line, experience taught me that this isn't always best and only to try it when things get really tough. I was feeding pretty heavy with hemp and casters, using caster on the hook. Maggot would only bring baby skimmers and small hybrids.
We also had an a spell where quite a few far-eastern people walked along the path behind me, killing my whip line dead for a lengthy spell, a switch to the pole saw me keep catching a few fish.

At around 2pm I had a look over my spot where I had been feeding corn and hemp, my double corn bait bought an instant response, from a 4oz roach. That was the last time I tried that spot in anger.
The last 2.5hrs was spent mostly on the whip, generally fishing 18 inches deep, occasionally deeper, occasionally shallower. This kept me busy with mostly roach from 2oz to 6oz, these fish looked slightly larger than the ones Barry had been catching on his whip, he'd been feeding groundbait...!!

As the light dropped at 4pm bites were coming quickly and at 12" deep, mostly 3oz roach, but they were adding to my net.
The all out was called at 4:30pm and I began to pack away, I would be 1st to weigh. But before the scales arrived, I went and had a chat with a few guys, most admitted to around 10lb, except Steve Fouracre who didn't want to guess his net. Rumour was that Jamie Cook had 30lb or more and Vic Bush was well over 20lb, both guys were in the favoured bay area.
I couldn't put a weight on my net, maybe mid-teens, I really didn't have a clue as I just get into a routine when whip fishing.

The scales arrived at me, and as I lifted my net out I knew that I had around 20lb+, the scales showed 26lb 12oz, nice enough and plenty more than I expected.
Next was Barry, he put 12lb 6oz on the board, between him and Steve Fouracre on peg 2, the weights were between around 10lb and 16lb, Steve's fish weighed 21lb 5oz and had a big perch in the catch.
So I sure of a section envelope.

I went and loaded the car and stood around chatting to Eric and Steve Fouracre, plus Phil Clapp. The scales were busy weighing pegs 10 to 19, only Dave Nash on peg 12 (golden peg no.1) had a tench, but the top weigh from these pegs was Mike Bendell's 19lb+ from peg 10, which was made up mostly 1-2oz silvers of various species.
I joined the scales as we headed to weigh in the North Bank, pegs 20 to 29. Peg 29, Ian King DNW'd, before the guys from 28 back to 23 had weights between 11lb and 14lb.
Then we arrived at Jamie Cook's peg, peg 22, a nice peg that's done me well in years gone by, he had some big rudd in his net, plus plenty of roach, skimmers, hybrids of various sizes. He weighed a fantastic 36lb 3oz to take the lead. Last to weigh was Vic Bush on peg 20, he'd had lots of fish, but mostly blades and small hybrids, these tend to weigh less than they look.
As he lifted his net it looked like he had around 30lb, but it came in at 24lb 5oz. Confirming my surprising 2nd spot.

Results:
1st, Jamie Cook, p22, 36lb 3oz
2nd, Lee Williams, p9, 26lb 12oz
3rd, Vic Bush, p20, 24lb 5oz
4th, Steve Fouracre, p2, 21lb 5oz.

Weigh Sheet, consistent figures. Bradney Ksd.
So all in all it was a productive match and my net surprised me, but I guess my fish were an ounce or so heavier than most of the average fish caught. I also found that, as expected, maggots only gave me small blades of hybrid. The quiet 90 minutes at the start, plus the 30 mins after the walkers passed (twice).
I managed to feed all my groundbait, that long pole line probably gave me 2lb of fish.
I also fed 3 pints of hemp and nearly 2 pints of caster to keep the roach coming.

Next up for me is a match at Avalon with the PSV guys.

Until then, take care.

Pawlett Club Match - KSD Bradney - 15th Sept. 2013

This has been a long time waiting as I have been busy with various distractions and interest has waned a touch.

Anyways back to the 15th of September. Pawlett Legion AC had originally had a match organised on the Huntspill, but E.A. work on the Withygrove stretch meant it was re-arranged to the Kings Sedgemoor Drain at Bradney.

Now, I grew up fishing that particular stretch, sometimes 6 times a week, but it had been a while since I last fished a match on there. Between times I have carp fished it and pike fished it, also a few float sessions with the kids have whiled away a few hours.
To me, it was a bit early in the year to get the best of the stretch, we need a flush through of the waterway and a few decent frosts to get the roach on the feed.

I think there was 11 or so anglers fishing the match and we were all armed with the usual baits of hemp (i had 6pts), corn (1pt), caster (3pts), maggot (1pt) and a little groundbait (2kg). Now hemp/caster is a top KSD bait, coupled with corn for the tench, some really good catches can be had.

Into the draw bag goes my hand, out comes peg 4, a carper's peg, not a fancied one, i have struggled pleasure fishing this for bits when carping, so I knew I would struggle.
Ideally I wanted peg 1 or between 9 and 13 or so, I cant remember which exactly, but the pegs towards Parchey would be the likely contenders.
This peg has an obvious gulley of the original river bed at around 13m in front, it is a good 8 inches deeper here than the rest of the swim. I had reeds and a tree across and deep margins.

My Peg.... Carper's Peg,

I set up a feeder rod for towards the far side, but did not think I would catch on this.
I set up a waggler to fish 3/4 or so across where I would feed hemp and maggot hoping for a few fish early on.
I set up 3 top kits, 1 for the gulley, to fish over 8 or so big balls of GB, hoping a rogue bream turned up (or a big mass of roach). The second was for a section short of the gulley for roach with hemp/caster mix, the 3rd was a margin rig for the tench (and odd carp---some were seen in the first few pegs when setting up) corn and lots of hemp,
Lastly I set up a 3.5m whip for bits close in, loose feeding maggot.

The whistle sounded and I fed the swims and started on the whip, it took ten minutes to get a bite, which was a 2oz roach, 10 mins later a similar sized rudd and a baby perch. Then it went dead.
The next half hour was spent on the waggler, I had a half dozen little roach and silver bream upto 3oz.
The feeder bought me nothing for the 20 mins I tried it. It was not productive at all.

Elsewhere things were hard, but news filtered through a bream and tench had been caught by the end pegs towards Parchey, also Nick on peg 3 had a few as had peg 1. Other than that the fishing was tough, and if I could not catch then it must have been hard.....

The wind and rain increased and presentation was poor, so the match was spent picking odd fish off each line, with the margin swim only giving me a  sail away bite a few seconds before the all out, but I missed it....ball cocks.

The all out sounded and I began t pack up in the wind and rain, I thought I had a couple pounds at a push and was last or close to. Sadly this is how it turned out, I think I weighed just under 2 pound coming 2nd or 3rd from last.
There were a good few 4-5lb weights of bits, a couple 6lb weighs, 1 of which was a bream and a few ounces of bits the other a tench and a few bits. The winner came from peg one with a 9lb-ish net of roach, which was a decent catch for the day.

I enjoyed the day, not the weather, but as I said, we were maybe a bit early in the season for Bradney.

I haven't been out since then, but for me my next trip out looks to be on the 20th when I have a club match on Avalon. I need the practice for the winter teams of 3 series Vic is holding on there between November and March.

Until then stay safe and tight lines
