Just thought I would do a quick catch up of my matches since my last blog which was 6 months or so ago.
I stopped doing the blog as I found it quite a chore to be honest, the wife started her new job in October and we now have weekends off together so I have been a bit lax when deciding if to go fishing at all, my enthusiasm waned, it still isn't heading in the right direction and to be fair I am not missing my weekly outings. Maybe the colder/winter months didn't help. Only time will tell....
October, Summerhayes Silvers' Winners Final, finished 4th and one out of the money. A little over 9lb and the best weight from the road bank, Eric Fouracres won from peg 13 or 14 if I remember rightly.
November, I didn't go fishing at all this month.
December, I fished the Pawlett Xmas match at Sedges, managed a few carp but not as much as good friend Paul Berry on the peg next to me who won, I think I was 7th on the day. It was bloody windy and I lost my cupping kit connector and the tosspot/catty approach was not how I wanted to go. Still some ciders as a prize and a nice bit of grub at the Legion after was appreciated.
I drew peg 43 on the Viaduct Xmas match and got it all wrong and only had 8lb or so, not last in the match by a few pounds and collected more cider. Mark Wynne won the match.
Boxing day at Sedges, drew peg 23, wasted an hour fishing for silvers, then went for carp but was never gonna get in the frame but did catch just under 60lb which may have been 4th or 5th. If I remember rightly Jamie won from peg 25 or 26 (I could be wrong though).
30th of the month I went to Landsend, drew peg 21, struggled and DNW's after catching just 1 carp and some silvers.
January, just the one match, a Saturday open at Todber, it fished bloody hard for all and I only squeaked a few little carp together from peg 62 on Ash. Beaten by Big Nick Selway off the next peg and 46lb was top weight on Ash, 78lb won overall off Hillview.
February, the solitary match I fished that month was down at Landsend, I drew peg 24, a peg that hadn't been great in the recent form so I was not best pleased, but the weather was ok and I actually had a good day picking up carp from the open water towards the island to finish with 15 carp and 7lb of silvers for a match winning 67lb (little carp....hmmm).
March, I covered for the Fishing Tackle Warehouse team in the last round of the Viaduct, team draw gave me peg 40 on the Match Lake, I wasn't too unhappy, but I struggled and only returned 7 point from 18 in the section, no disaster but I feel I could have done a few more fish and a few extra points.
The 17th gave me a 'free' match on the Landsend Winter League, I would be on Lake 3 and joked I would be on peg 68, as usual, and hey ho I drew that peg. Anyways I put 23lb of assorted silvers on the scales with some carp for a total of 42lb+ and 4th on the lake and the lake's top silvers net, so a nice pick up there. (4 times I have had that peg, 4 times I have had the best silvers net on the lake, haha).
A week later I was at Sedges, peg 26 and was happy with that, but the joy never lasted as I had 60lb and finished maybe 6th on the day as James Withers won with 172lb from peg 40, he nearly got knocked back by 100lb as he was close to the limit.
30th, Todber, peg 52 on Hillview, I draw this area regularly and it is not an area of choice most of the time. But 60lb and a days fishing as the match was over for me at the draw. Homeground gave the best weights overall and the best silvers was 89lb of maggot feeder caught skimmers on Hillview.
April, well this month I have been a 3 times thus far.
Pawlett's annual Silvers match at The Sedges (7th April), had a tough section with some very good anglers who know the venue well. I drew peg 15. I wasn't feeling up to fishing but saw the day out and surprisingly finished 2nd overall on the day and best weight off Brick Lake with 35lb 4oz of skimmer and a nice little envelope. Keith Clapp won from Tile Lake with 14oz more than me....
The following weekend it was Summerhayes Longs. I have draw down on peg 19, never been that far down before and I had silvers specialist Roy Hughes on peg 20. I wanted to fish for silvers with worms and caster but that never happened. I had a good 2nd hour catching carp on pellets across and picked the odd carp for the last 4 hours, not many, but luckily enough that was good enough as my lowly 52lb was surprisingly enough to win the match and put some money in the wallet, but it was an enjoyable day trying to figure out how to get the most from the fish that were playing games on the day in that they would come to feed up in the water but couldn't get a bite shallow.
Lastly this weekend saw me on Viaduct's Easter Monday open match, peg 74, which was miles away from where the fish/weights have been coming from. It's a peg I really don't like but I gave it a go.
I landed a couple carp, lost 2 foul hookers and lost one when I shouldn't have (I should have added sections to follow it out on a run but I didn't and the hooklength broke). 6 decent skimmers and a small perch were my other fish. I tipped back my 2 carp (15lb) and silvers (10lb) for a DNW.
Other than at Sedges where it is deeper I have more or less been using DT Floats F1/Silvers in 0.3g for the silvers and Slim P's in 0.2 and 0.4g for my carp-type fishing and I cannot recommend them enough, great floats.
Now the spring has arrived I do hope to get out on the bank a bit more and am looking forward to a few matches I have booked in for the rest of 2019. But I am more looking forward to a couple weekends away with the wife, especially BST Hyde Park and Madness in Taunton in July.
Maybe, just maybe, will I begin to start blogging regular.

Viaduct 13m Pole Match and Float Only rnd 2 at Landsend. 9th and 10th June
Not too much to write about today regarding the weekend just gone. Saturday saw Mike Nicholls running a 13m pole only match at Viaduct on Campbell lake, so I had booked into that.
So I arrived in loads of time, sorted the kit and it was soon the draw, 121 or 135 on the 2 end banks were my 'hope fors' but I managed to get 126, not so good, actually one of the pegs I would very rarely, if ever. pick out of choice. It can be ok for silvers at times though.
At my peg I set up a short meat line rig for under an overhanging tree to my right, a pellt rig for down my right edge. Plus shallow and deep pellet rigs for 13m in front. Lastly a token silvers rig which I didn't fancy using, but had John Fuidge over on 118 fishing for them as a guide to if the skimmers were having a munch.
Well I could waffle on about what I tried etc but where I was, and really for most on the lake, it was hard going and other than a few foul hooked fish which inevitably came off I only managed 4 carp during the day, 1 on the deck on the long pellet rig, 1 on meat and 2 shallow. I also had a few silvers, maybe 5lb or so. I didn't trouble the scales. 2 pegs to my left Fred Roberts only had 1 skimmer in just over 2 hours fishing so went home then. Martin McMahon on my right had 1 carp, 2 roach and a skimmer and the chap to my left got 3 foul hooked lumps in and managed another 4. There were quite a few catches of around 3 or 4 carp and I never saw John catching much silvers, similarly Mike Nicholls said he never had too many and lost some tench in the edge. Peg 123 had a few skimmers, but that can be a great silvers (and carp) peg.
Not sure on the results as I would have been half way home by then but Martin Rayet caught well in the 2nd half of the match on peg 116 after an almost fishless 2.5hrs at the start. Joe McMahon on 135 had a few I gathered after a slow start.

Sunday saw me at Landsend for the 2nd round of Tony Rixon's Float Only Series.
I fancied being on the match lake and would have preferred to be along the far bank pegs 13 to 24. Or 68 on Lake 3 as I like that peg., as I never draw flyers pegs 32 and 33 on Speci were unlikely to end in my hand.
I did get the area I wanted though in peg 19 and was quite pleased with the draw to be fair. I did fancy fishing for silvers, but that went out of the window due to my stubbornness I guess.
A shallow rig for stalking and against the island where it was only around 10 inches deep at the most.
A meat rig for 6m in front and a little to the left.
A pellet rig for my topkit to my left by a fallen tree/snag.
An edge rig for along my right edge if needed.
Again not a lot to mention on the day, I landed one early then started to suffer a few lost foul hooked fish, one was decent but done me under my platform just as I thought I had it beaten. The next drop I foul hooked one that came to the top to be netted and turned an belted across to the far bank reeds and broke me.
I managed a skimmer of 2.5lbs on my silvers line and a couple margin roach and rudd on maggots. I also had a couple flying skimmers shed the hook, both looked a good 3lb each.
I did manage to see some fish caught during the day from the opposite bank in Shawn Townsend and Martin Rayet. Plus Neil Mercer on peg 18 to my left had a few on and off during the day including landing a couple decent sized foul hookers. He had Gary O'Shea on his left who also had a decent enough day on peg 16.
Well for me I had 2 carp in the first hour by fishing across, only small carp though, 4lbers.
Then a quiet spell of a couple hours before a couple more from across and a couple mugged fish.
One carp from my right edge another 4lber was the only carp from there, in hindsight I should have fished further along that margin.
The last 90 mins gave me 2 small carp on the meat line, which they were visiting all day but not feeding and defo not on the bottom. I think I ended with 7 carp and my clicker had 33lb on it.
I expected to be last in section, no shock in that.
At the weigh in I somehow didn't manage last in section as Neil had 80lb-ish and Bela had 70lb-ish from peg 21 then my 44lb was 3rd much to the amusement of Tony.
The last couple of pegs in the section were not so good as Gordon Canning and Vince Shipp struggled. Prior to our bank weighing it was Shaun Townsend on peg 6 who won the lake and second on the day with 187ln fishing long to some reedy type plants, the cover and shade would have helped and Neil on peg 18 caught well in the last hour when the shade had covered his part of the island.
I had tried all sorts to try and get a few extra fish, even big potting maggots across, and hoping that would help. It didn't make a difference. Maybe I could have fed heavier but I didn't fancy foul hooking too many more than what I had done. Maybe I should have fished for silvers as top silvers was 9lb on the lake, and Mike West won the silvers with 11lb from Speci lake. Would I have had that? I am not sure either way.
Winner on the day was that man Craig 'Trig' Edmunds with nearly 250lb caught mostly shallow I believe from peg 32 on Speci, a good peg and good angler combo was going to be hard to beat. So well done that man.
I would imagine Mike Nicholls will have the full results of both matches when he does his blogs later in the week as he is on his yearly week long fishing 'holiday' and has a bunch of matches this week.
So for me, not a great weekend, Campbell fished hard and there was lots of anglers not catching a lot.
Landsend I drew ok but fished like a tit, I guess that is a combination of low confidence thanks to my recent drawing and me losing interest early on in the day, even before the match begins and the lack of actually catching fish in the last few weeks has left me a little rusty perhaps. But I shall persevere as I am hopeful I will get among some fish at some point.
No idea where or what I have planned for the weekend, maybe a pleasure session somewhere one day. The rivers are open from Saturday.....so maybe I will get a ticket and try one? Maybe.

Easter 4 Day Weekend, Landsend, Sedges, Shiplate. 30/03/18 - 02/04/18
So the 4 day weekend has been and gone for another year, sadly we never saw the weather we wanted (well at least I wanted it kind of hot and sunny). But it was not as bad as the doom sayers predicted not a few weeks earlier, we didn't have a 3rd episode of the 'Beast from the East' nor was it a wash out.
Any way the Friday was spent in the company of my family at Tyntesfield House near Clevedon, that was nice, better in the summer no doubt. Being National Trust members is great and gets us out of the house when boredom sets in. After that it was burgers at the Bridge Inn then I went and had a quick look at the Charlie Barnes memorial match at Acorn, a silvers match, plenty of carp caught....the top 3 were taken by the Shipp's on the top lake.

On to Saturday and I had booked into the Landsend match and the weather looked okay with very little in the way of rain predicted but the wind may have been pain, but generally it was ok.
We had 17 I think, so Lakes 2 and 3 were used, I didn't mind where I would be but I haven't been on a peg in the 20's for a long time, alas I drew the same peg as the last round of the winter series in peg 68. No pics sorry (actually no pics all weekend....) I remarked to Mark Walsh that he would catch a boat load of F1s from his peg 5 draw, he insisted he would catch skimmers....
I set up a shallow pellet rig for against the island, a depth pellet rig for the same spot and this rig also did down to the weed bed to my right.
A meat rig for 6m off to my left and a light carp rig (heavy silvers?) for 5m in front.
For company I had Jim Jenner across on peg 41, he had Russ Peck further along from him on 46 (I think).
Anyway as the match goes, I wont go into much detail, I lost 4 foul hooked on the depth rig in the first 10 minutes or so but couldn't get any fish on the shallow rig, they seemed to just be mulling around all day.
I did start getting a few on the depth rig by the island, 8 or 9 carp and 3 small F1s by the half way stage. But the carp were small compared to Russ and Jim.
It slowed so I tried the meat line, this gave me 3 carp including my largest at 4lb.
Then for the last 90 minutes I focused on trying to catch some silvers as I was unsure how Mike Duckett was paying the pools, so at least I could try to cover my options as it seemed unlikely I would catch Jim and definitely I would not catch Russ.
I managed plenty of roach, a crucian and a few skimmers on the silvers (I fished caster or maggot over groundbait) but I did pick up a few carp there and also some carp by the weed bed where I hoped to get F1s (count here as silvers).
At the all out I had 18 or 19 carp and my clicker showed 53lb, plus perhaps 10 or 12lb of silvers.
As it turned out Lake 2 was tricky as Steve Seager was top weight from peg 14, 54lb+. But Walshy had 23lb of F1s to win the Silvers from peg 5, Martin Pettifer had 18-09 of silvers from peg 11.
Jim weighed in first on lake 3 with 79lb, Russ then had 123lb (I told him he had 120lb as I had been watching...lol). The rest of the guys' were topped by 49lb then I was last to weigh and I had 18-02 of silvers and my carp, all 56-12 of them, pushed me up to 74-14 to give me 3rd overall and 3rd in the silvers and a nice pick-up.

Sunday saw me covering at Sedges in the last round of the Silver League and I pulled out peg 7 on Brick Lake, not too bad really but thought I had my work cut out when I realised I had venue silvers expert Phil Clapp on peg 6 and my White Acres roomy, Jamie Parkhouse on my fave peg 8.
The wife was with me for this match, it was muddy, but she was happy enough and can take the banter.
On to the match, a small feeder was made up, a rig for banded 6mm pellet over 4s at 11m (fishless during the day), my usual meat rig for 6m (fishless for once), and a rig to fish at 13m in a couple spots (one groundbait, the other micros and caster). Oh and another rig that went fishless, that was nan edge rig and would double as a shallow rig at 13m.
Well the match was hard to say the least, the far side started well but slowed (except Jess Jordan) and other than 1 skimmer of 1lb at the halfway stage, the feeder was motionless, I did manage a handful of skimmers to 2lb on my groundbait line, including a couple foul hooked. I also had a tench on the micro/caster line after I potted the best part of a pint of caster in such was how slow it was going.
The odd roach was also added to my net but not many.
Jamie tipped back 2 decent skimmers/bream and a couple roach, maybe 7.5lb, before the all out.
Peg 9 had don't ok but said he was only getting smaller skimmers.
Phil on peg 6 had a couple tench and some decent skimmers and lost a proper skimmer late on, but I had one come off, we all lose fish. I banked on him beating me and also peg 9, so I figured no envelope.
During the course of the day all 4 of us (pegs 6, 7, 8 and 9) all had plenty of carp action, especially late on and especially Phil. Annoying but kind of fun at times.
Come the all out Phil said I was 3lb ahead of him, I laughed.
The weigh in was done and Eric Fouracre had 19lb from peg 1 then there were some nets to 12lb before Phil had 15lb-ish only for me to put 17lb on the scales and peg 9 had around 13lb I think.
So I had won my section and another pick-up.
Actually Jess Jordan had 24lb from peg 13 to win the lake and match.
Tile Lake saw John Fuidge have top weight with 21lb or so and then weights tailed off a bit with 13lb maybe 2nd on the lake.
I think, not certain, that I was 5th on the day, but I was 3rd on the lake.

Monday, well the weather forecasters are tits, they said it would be windy and rainy most of the day when I went to bed Sunday night, so a day at home was on the cards.
I woke to see the weather had changed and it looked predominantly dry for the day, but a breezy afternoon.
I was undecided what to do and eventually was persuaded to go to Shiplate, well I was going to be late arriving after only deciding to go 30 mins before the draw, so I rushed around sorting my kit and bait, loaded the car and me and the wife were on our way, 30 mins after the draw I had a pick of 2 pegs in the bucket, peg 6 and peg 12 were left, I ended up on the latter.
I rushed to set up but was almost done by the all in.
I wont bore you with the details as it was hard from peg 7 onwards with the top 3 spots from pegs 5 (empty peg 6 next to him), peg 1 and then peg 3. Ray Wickham won the silvers form peg 10.
I did manage to land 1 carp after 90 minutes, a 4lber on banded 6mm pellet over 4s, I did lose, probably foul hooked, during the day, well in the last 30 minutes.
I managed a few silvers on maggot over groundbait but I also had some come off, they may have cost me 2nd in the silvers, they may not have, I will never know but they felt decent. But I did beat few, so at least it proved it wasn't completely or only me that had a slow day.
But it is a great fishery that I don't get to fish too often, well maintained and very welcoming owners, I will try and get there a few times this year.

Sunday saw me covering at Sedges in the last round of the Silver League and I pulled out peg 7 on Brick Lake, not too bad really but thought I had my work cut out when I realised I had venue silvers expert Phil Clapp on peg 6 and my White Acres roomy, Jamie Parkhouse on my fave peg 8.
The wife was with me for this match, it was muddy, but she was happy enough and can take the banter.
On to the match, a small feeder was made up, a rig for banded 6mm pellet over 4s at 11m (fishless during the day), my usual meat rig for 6m (fishless for once), and a rig to fish at 13m in a couple spots (one groundbait, the other micros and caster). Oh and another rig that went fishless, that was nan edge rig and would double as a shallow rig at 13m.
Well the match was hard to say the least, the far side started well but slowed (except Jess Jordan) and other than 1 skimmer of 1lb at the halfway stage, the feeder was motionless, I did manage a handful of skimmers to 2lb on my groundbait line, including a couple foul hooked. I also had a tench on the micro/caster line after I potted the best part of a pint of caster in such was how slow it was going.
The odd roach was also added to my net but not many.
Jamie tipped back 2 decent skimmers/bream and a couple roach, maybe 7.5lb, before the all out.
Peg 9 had don't ok but said he was only getting smaller skimmers.
Phil on peg 6 had a couple tench and some decent skimmers and lost a proper skimmer late on, but I had one come off, we all lose fish. I banked on him beating me and also peg 9, so I figured no envelope.
During the course of the day all 4 of us (pegs 6, 7, 8 and 9) all had plenty of carp action, especially late on and especially Phil. Annoying but kind of fun at times.
Come the all out Phil said I was 3lb ahead of him, I laughed.
The weigh in was done and Eric Fouracre had 19lb from peg 1 then there were some nets to 12lb before Phil had 15lb-ish only for me to put 17lb on the scales and peg 9 had around 13lb I think.
So I had won my section and another pick-up.
Actually Jess Jordan had 24lb from peg 13 to win the lake and match.
Tile Lake saw John Fuidge have top weight with 21lb or so and then weights tailed off a bit with 13lb maybe 2nd on the lake.
I think, not certain, that I was 5th on the day, but I was 3rd on the lake.

Monday, well the weather forecasters are tits, they said it would be windy and rainy most of the day when I went to bed Sunday night, so a day at home was on the cards.
I woke to see the weather had changed and it looked predominantly dry for the day, but a breezy afternoon.
I was undecided what to do and eventually was persuaded to go to Shiplate, well I was going to be late arriving after only deciding to go 30 mins before the draw, so I rushed around sorting my kit and bait, loaded the car and me and the wife were on our way, 30 mins after the draw I had a pick of 2 pegs in the bucket, peg 6 and peg 12 were left, I ended up on the latter.
I rushed to set up but was almost done by the all in.
I wont bore you with the details as it was hard from peg 7 onwards with the top 3 spots from pegs 5 (empty peg 6 next to him), peg 1 and then peg 3. Ray Wickham won the silvers form peg 10.
I did manage to land 1 carp after 90 minutes, a 4lber on banded 6mm pellet over 4s, I did lose, probably foul hooked, during the day, well in the last 30 minutes.
I managed a few silvers on maggot over groundbait but I also had some come off, they may have cost me 2nd in the silvers, they may not have, I will never know but they felt decent. But I did beat few, so at least it proved it wasn't completely or only me that had a slow day.
But it is a great fishery that I don't get to fish too often, well maintained and very welcoming owners, I will try and get there a few times this year.

Landsend 'So-Simple Baits' Winter League, Final Round. 18/03/18
Firstly I would like to thank Ken Rayner for running this series, Mike Duckett for accommodating us all and to Andy Seery of So Simple Baits for sponsoring the league with goodies midway and at the end. We all appreciate your efforts and support.
So with the scene set on a rather wintery note, cold temps and bundles of snow across the region a few no-shows was always going to be the case and as it was there were a few from each of the 3 sections. But the roads in the main were ok in getting the fishery (and home after) as they were clear, I certainly never encountered anything out of the ordinary except down the street where I live.
The draw, unbeknown to me, was moved back to 9am to allow people time to get to the venue.
My turn on lake 3, no real preference in peg to be honest as I wasn't sure how it would fish, the air temps were chilly but we had seen a few warm days previous to around 14 degrees and that would have warmed the lake a little and would take more than 24hrs of cooler weather to drop them down too much. I had the 1st ticket for my section and pulled out peg 68, not too bad, a deeper peg and having the point of an island at 14m in front, a weed bed to my left and open water options.
For company I had Pete Nurse to my left on peg 70 and across the opposite side were Martin Pettifer and Rod Wootton (not in a corner for a change).
The snow, as you can see, had returned and pretty much snowed for a few hours of the match coupled with a poxy cold wind, which I am thankful that it was not blowing directly at me.
I set up 4 rigs:
A shallow pellet rig (0.2g DT Pinger) as the fish can come up in the water here, even in winter. This went unused.
A rig for the edges, dead maggot over the same, at topkit range next to some tree stumps, but my DT Big D never saw more than 5 minutes use.
2 identical rigs were also made up to target pretty much anything, heavy-ish silvers (or light carp I guess) rigs using 0.3g DT RBS Open Waters with 0.10 hooklengths and size 18 911F1 hooks. The only difference being was the depth. 1 was for long and in open water and the 2nd for 7m in front, next to the island in front and to my left by the weed bed, simple really. Strung out shot on both.
Bait selection was live and dead maggots, some casters (no bites), some expanders (froze unused) and some micros and a little groundbait for feed.
The match began and I fed a line at 7m in front with a decent sized ball of groundbait with a few dead maggots and micros added. A helping of casters by the weed bed.
Out in open water at 13.5m I fed a couple spots, one with micros and one with casters, neither gave me a bite all day so no more on those.
I started out by the island toss-potting maggots and micros with double maggot on the hook.
10 minutes passed and I had a roach, then another, nice sized ones maybe 3-4oz each.
I then hooked a carp which done it's best to escape but after a protracted battle I slipped the landing net under a 8lb+ common, well hooked in the pec.
A few more roach from the same spot then an F1 of 2lb found my welcoming keepnet, but we were all finding it hard going, even series winner Stu Barnett on peg 51 was not catching, just losing the odd carp.
I persevered, trying different lines with no success so it was back out towards the island. But things had really slowed, I would get the odd roach and even a blade skimmer now and then but that was it.
We were soon passed the halfway stage and Stu was catching regularly and probably had 8 carp or more, the rest of us, not a lot. Pete had a burst of 3 small carp down in peg 70, but that was it, he only had 1 more during the contest. Martin was getting a few roach on caster, I couldn't get a bite with that in the hook. Road was landing the odd silver, he already had a few skimmers in the first hour.
I then had a flurry of fish, a couple crucians from my 7m groundbait line and a micro perch (also bumped 2 decent fish, maybe foul hooked) 2 f1's from by the island and another f1 of 1lb by the weedbed, my only fish from there.
The next couple of hours dragged, I added the odd small silver from by the island and lost a carp that tied my rig to a rope (for the aerator) off the point of the island, I had to pull for a break. Stu was doing fine and would easily win the lake.
In to the final 60 minutes and another carp was hooked and landed, that would be 2 in the net, maybe 14lb total as the second was around 6lb. A few silvers including a nice 12oz skimmer were had on the 7m line as the island area seemed slow.
Martin had a small carp and Rod actually landed one late on, a 5lber, he also managed to lose a couple more skimmers and an f1, he wasn't having a good day. The all out sounded and I think I had 10lb of silvers and my 2 carp for another 14lb.
I packed up and went and started the weigh in, well not a lot to report there except Stu had 106lb from peg 51 to re-affirm his league winnings, but this match also bought him the knock-out winning as his opponent, Tony Rixon had 20-something pound of silvers from Match Lake (lake 2) peg 22.
I managed 2nd on the lake and best silvers on the lake with 12lb of those any 14lb of carp. So a pick up for me. Bonus.
So back at the cabin, car all loaded and I stayed to see how people had done overall in the series. Stu Barnett won overall and the knock-out. Tony won overall in the silvers while Nick Duckett, Martin Rayet and Gary O'Shea took 2nd, 3rd and 4th overall. Well done to all of them.
I managed 7th overall in the league and in the silvers I ended up finishing 4th. I am pleased with those results as it was my 1st time in the league and I am not a venue regular by any means (not sure I am anywhere to be honest). A couple poor choices and my usual inability to draw well regularly cost me some points for sure, enough points to alter things? I don't know.
Not sure where I am this weekend, maybe I will get a ticket for the Golden Rod match at Viaduct, maybe I will have a weekend off, I don't know, but it is my daughter's birthday so perhaps I will just eat cake.....

Landsend Winter League, Rounds 4 (11-2-18) and 5 (11-3-18)
For various reasons I never got around to writing up my blog for the 4th round of this league, luckily enough you guys never missed much.....until now.
The 11th of Feb, day after my birthday and Steve Sewell's actual birthday, was the date for the 4th round, an open draw and them rotation for these last 3 matches. I was hoping for Lake 3 really and the same sequence as the 1st three matches. I was still in the knock-out but I never knew whom I was faced with, but it turned out to be Tony Rixon, thankfully I never knew until Ken posted the results on Facebook after the event.
Being in the K/O would sort of dictate the fact that I would ideally be fishing for carp, as my league position deemed that I was unlikely to finish in the overall standings in a position to pick up. I was doing ok in the Silvers, but only 1 overall payout for this and Tony doing really well, plus Ken Rayner, Gary O'Shea and venue owner Mike Duckett in and around the upper regions of the standings put me in a misty-mind-set of deciding which way to go....
Anyway peg 34 on the Speci Lake (lake 1) would be my peg for the match, a decent peg at times but hasn't really kick-started in this series with 32 and 33 (corners) being more likely to throw up the winning weight. Peg 28 also was dominating the silvers fishing on this lake recently. Steve Sewell was on that.
The same rigs as last time out on this lake were assembled. But the wind was bloody awful and even at times during the day 7m was hard enough to hold and fishing across to the island nigh on impossible. I had Rod Wootton on peg 33 to my left and Rob Watts a couple pegs to my right on 36.
I started on a 7m line for some silvers, I had fed 2 lines at 7m, in front a couple small balls of groundbait and a few maggot type baits. To my right I fed micros and a few expanders. I began in front, well after trying to ship across to the island, but the wind put paid to that.
I had a couple little perch and a roach in the initial 45 minutes but nobody had caught much at all.
I then hooked a carp and after a good tussle I luckily got it in on the no.4-6 laccy. It was around 7lb.
Not much happened for the next few hours, I lost a couple foul hooked fish, one at the net, the other somewhere towards the point of the island, both on the silvers line in front, I didn't have a bite all day over micros.
I did try fishing across at times, but really was pointless in the wind, so much so I followed Rod's lead and went and got a tip rod, especially as Stu Barnett on peg 31 had a few on his. Actually I don't think Rod had a bite for 5hrs and 30mins when he had a 5lb carp up in the water along his end bank, after the wind dropped.
Anyway my little groundbait feeder took a liking to the trees on the island a couple times but a couple little fish were bullied out by my 2nd and last carp of the day with an hour to go, that one also was around 7lb.
Rob on peg 36 had landed 2, but one was a proper lump of double figures he said. Further along they struggled. Steve Sewell on p28 had been busy catching roach on and off all day. Stu on peg 31 had done decent on the tip and Martin Pettifer on peg 32 had struggled until the last 30 minutes when I think he had 3 decent carp on the pole. I was looking at 4th or 5th on the lake and naff-all in the silvers stakes.
As it turned out I was 4th on the lake, not the worst result. Pegs 31, 32 and 36 were the top 3 and indeed Steve picked up the silvers envelope from peg 28.
The match this past weekend was the 5th round and I was due to be on the Match Lake (lake 2).
The result see my position of 12th in the league overall and in the silvers I stand in 5th.
The last round is next Sunday.

Now I fancied peg 22, that peg has been great for silvers in recent weeks with bags to over 20lb, that'd be a great day. Next on my list would be peg 15, yes 13 and 11 have been and probably are better pegs at the moment (1st and 2nd on the Saturday match), but I like peg 15.
Well I drew near the end of the queue and found peg 15 in my hand, realistically that meant silvers were out of the window, especially with decent silvers angler Mark Leader (covering for Jack Billett) on peg 22. So carp it was then.

For company I had Martin Pettifer on peg 18 and Pete Nurse on peg 13. Rod Wootton had drawn his 5th corner in 5 matches in this league over on peg 11. Hmmmm....
I set up a silvers rig for around 9m in front, but this only gave me a single roach and a single 1oz perch all day, but then I never gave it a whole load of effort.
I had a meat rig for 7m to my left around 2m off the margin and this same rig would also suffice for the same distance in front and slightly to the right. The left side I fed dead maggots and meat, the line in front-ish was fed with meat and micros.
A rig for dobbing maggots off bottom between 12" and 3ft deep was on the roost, used all over the peg. Lastly a rig to fish on the deck at 14m off in the 11 o'clock direction. I would feed mostly via a toss-pot unless the fish told me otherwise.
I had a few expanders but my main choices of bait were meat and maggots (live and dead).
Well I started off all quiet and it seemed the fish were not interested in feeding for myself, Rod and Pete. It was maybe 45 minutes before I had my 1st fish, a small roach, a couple more followed all on the 14m line and on the drop. I had foul hooked a couple,, trashing 2 rigs, before one snagged me about 5m out into the lake in front of peg 14. I lost the whole rig (retrieved after the match with offending snag). Then I landed my 1st carp after around 90 minutes, a 3lb fish caught at 14m. Then a few more foul hooked fish came and went, It was bloomin hard going, but the other end of the lake was more productive by a long way as fish seemed to be getting caught with more regularity.
Pete on peg 13 took 3hrs to get his 1st fish, on the lead, before the following 45 mins gave him perhaps another 6 or 7 on the pole, some foul hooked (and landed) and some in the mouth. Then he didn't have anything after that spurt of fish, so in 6hrs he had 45 minutes of fishing. Similarly Rod on peg 11 had a similar thing, only his fish came after Pete's bites stopped.
Back to my match, I managed my 2nd carp (and a few 1oz roach) on my dobbing rig set 12" deep, but the carp didn't want to really feed. I probably could have caught a roach every drop in if I set up a shallow maggot rig for the roach, but the were, or seemed, to be 1oz sort of stamp and at 14m it didn't make sense.
I did manage a couple F1's on the 14m line and a couple 3oz-5oz roach from there, these better stamp fish came after toss-potting full pots of maggots and lowering through the feed. But I felt the carp were not responding to this.
With about an hour to go I had a look down to my left on the meat, missed a couple bites, but did land one carp of 3lb or so. A 2nd carp (and my 4th) came from the same spot and was a decent 7lb ghostie, my clicker was on 19lb, miles behind those off to my right and also behind Pete. I was unsure of pegs 7 and 11.
A look on the meat line in front gave me a bright golden carp of 3lb. That was my last carp landed, though I had a couple foul hookers come off.
On the all-out I was in the process of playing a fish from the meat line in front and a welcome 2lb ide went into the keepnet. My silvers clicker showed 9lb (ide, 2x F1 and some roach and perch). My 5 carp had 22lb on the clicker.
I packed up and waited for the scales and my clickers were close with my 2 nets combined giving me 32lb 15oz (carp were 23lb 9oz, silvers 9lb 6oz).
I followed the scales to see that Mark Leader won the match with 63lb from peg 22 and somehow I had won the lake's silvers. So an envelope, which was a bonus. Section wise I was 6th, so a poor result. But as happened in the last round on that lake, the fish showed in better numbers at the opposite end of the lake to where I was pegged.
The last round is next Sunday.

Landsend So-Simple Winter League, Round 3. 28-01-18
The 3rd round of this series came and went this past Sunday, my section of 9 were destined for the Match Lake (Lake 2) for the 6hr duration. The weather looked fair and relatively mild, I was thinking it may fish well. I should not really do that thinking stuff, I think it jinxes things somewhat......
Anyways, I arrived and had a chat with a couple of the guys before loading my trolley (I have sorted how to load it now..!!) before heading off to pay my pols and pick my peg.

I was through in the Knock-Out thanks to a bye in the last round, but Steve Seager was my friendly opposition this round and thankfully he was in my section and drew a couple pegs away from me. I drew peg 16 (no pics, left phone at home....numpty), which is a bit vanilla, something and nothing, perhaps bang on average. Steve drew peg 20, which is a better peg and the area has been producing some bags of silvers including big perch, skimmers and a few tench.
For company I had Rod Wooton on peg 14 to my left and Martin Pettifer on peg 18 to my right.
A few rigs set up:
1st was a silvers rig, DT Floats F1/Silvers in 12 x no11 shot, for 7m in front using maggots and caster over a small helping of groundbait.
The 2nd rig using a DT Floats RBS Margin in 0.3g, this was for meat over a few maggots and meat both left and right at 7m each direction.
3rd rig was using a DT Pinger in 0.1g for fishing up the shelf, initially using 4mm pellets over micro, but I swapped to maggots after a couple hours. This would be dobbed around the far side at 14.5m.
I made up a margin rig for maggots over micros down to my left in a couple spots. A DT BIG D float was the pattern of choice, dotted right down.
Lastly I had a DT RBS Open Water float in 0.3g for around 13m in front using maggots over a few micros and maggots.
Well at the all-in I was just about to load my pole cup to put a bot of bait in a couple spots when I noticed Martin into a fish. Well I continued to sort my peg, pour a cup of tea and watched Martin play the fish, which was not hooked in the mouth, he took a shade over 20 minutes to get the leviathan into his landing net, it was hooked in a fin but a good 12lb+. Tidy start for him.
Now I would love to say how I spent the day picking up odd carp in amongst the big skimmers I was catching, but when does that happen?
It was actually really really hard going with everyone (except Rod) catching plippy roach, odd small skimmer and a handful of F1s (count as silvers). Steve Seager also had a golden tench, he also hooked a few decent perch which his neighbour, Gary O'Shea, also did, but Gary never lost his but landed them unlike Steve.
Me, well I had maybe 1.5lb of silvers after 4hrs, not a sign of a carp. But as we approached 90 minutes to go I managed a carp down to my left on maggot, a one off carp here as I never had another bite after I hooked a snag and had to pull for a break.
Elsewhere, Rod had 2 carp in 2 drops off the island with an hour to go, coupled with an early F1.
Tom Mangnall was over on peg 11 and despite his early slow start had began to net the odd carp and was doing alright.
Martin on peg 18 was just getting roach, more rapidly than me, he was fishing in the gap between the 2 islands.
I managed a 1.5lb skimmer with 30 minutes to go, but other than my roach and odd 1oz perch it was very hard for the 6hrs and to be fair most were happy when the all-out was called.
I packed up and followed the scales, but it was only peg 1, Martin Rayet (40lb) and Tom on peg 11 (31lb) had nets of note. Ade on peg 5 had just over 5lb of silvers and never weighed in any carp despite hooking a couple.
I managed 5lb of silvers plus my 2.5lb carp weighed a hefty 4lb 7oz so 9lb 7oz was my total.
This was a few ounces more than Rods 2 carp and single F1.
Martin's 1st drop foul hooked carp weighed 12lb 7oz plus he had 5lb 2oz of silvers for 3rd on the lake with 17-09.
Steve Seager had 7-02, which was a golden tench and a few F1s. Gary had a tidy 12-00 of silvers including some chunky perch, but no carp. Matt Williams on p24 DNW'd after 3 little silvers.
So I squeezed into section 5th and gained 5 silver's points, so not the best of days really, again one more carp would have boosted my points as would another 1.5lb skimmer. Ah well.

As it stands I am mid-table in the overall standings and 3rd, I think in the silvers standings, plus I luckily got through in the Knock-Out.
Next Sunday I am at Sedges for a Silvers match, the first time I have fished there in ages and ages and am looking forward to it.

Pawlett match, Landsend Lakes 1 and 2. 21-01-17
A short blog this week as the friggin flu has taken it's hold on me and I am shattered.
The 1st match of the year with the club, usually a decent turn out for each match but often this one gets one of the largest attendances, but this week it didn't, still 20 or 21 were fishing after a few sensible souls booked out.
The weather was due to be shite, it was shite, it rained for the whole time we were there, luckily as the day wore on the temps rose, it was bitter first thing but by 1pm it was ok.
I fancied pegs 32 and 33 to do the business for the carp, as I suggested the previous night and to the 2 that drew them. Plus peg 21 on the match lake would be tough to beat with silvers, especially when Chris 'giffy; Ware drew it, he aint no mug when catching a few.
Me, I wanted to be on the match lake, not massively fussed where, but I drew peg 36 on speci.... Not an ideal start....given the incessant rain I even considered going home as the reality is (in my eyes)that you are unlikely to win anything from that area at this time of the year.
But I did go to the peg, slowly got all my kit organised and set about setting up my rigs:
1st rig, silvers. 0.3g DT F1/Silvers carbon float with 4-6 laccy and 0.10>20 hook, maggots over groundbait at 7m.
2nd rig, carp (ideally), 0.3g DT RBS 12 laccy with 0.14>16 hook for meat over a few bits of meat and a few maggots. Fished at 7m off to my left.
3rd rig, anything rig, 0.1g DT Pinger, 8-10 laccy with 0.12>16 hook for maggots and casters over the same with a few micros.. around 13.5m across dragged a bit up a shelf in a couple spots.
The all in was shouted, I was still plumbing up....lol. Steve Fouracre next door on 34 thought I was fishing already, but it was my plummet....he apologised. Lol.
My 1st fish, a small perch came after 15 minutes, then a couple more.
Then an hour of nothing before my 1st carp was hooked, on the silvers rig obviously, but I managed to get it in, around 4-5lb methinks.
Meanwhile 32 and 33 were catching odd carp while Rob Dodd on peg 40 was foul hooking them occasionally, but he got 3 in out of 5 or 6 I think during the day, and a 2lb perch.
Opposite on peg 29 Mike Davis was getting a roach every drop and was doing alright.
It was around the halfway point that I began to have 'issues', I decided to try fishing my shelf line with a couple maggots, a roach and a perch, only small but a good sign, then a carp, that tore off left and shed the hook in to a snag around 2.5m off the far bank, so then I re-plumbed around the far shelf and tangled in a bunch of line and tree branches that were attached to 2 trees on the far side and dropped down into the water. When originally plumbing up I thought it was just a branch in the water so avoided that spot. I was wrong. I lifted my plummet to reveal a huge tangle of branches, twigs, line, braid and a couple leads. It snapped my hooklength and I lost the plummet.
So I got my cupping kit and tried to drag the offending sang back to me.....that didn't work. It became too tangled so I rested my pole on the water and went off to the car for the lead rod.
I came bag cast over the snag, sort of, unscrewed my tangled pole cup which semi-sunk and drifted off to my left and then I tried hand lining the snag back. It was a farce really but I got a bunch of line/braid/2oz leads and a tonne of branches and twigs back and out of the water. The rest of the snag is possibly still in the peg, not sure, not sure if even still connected to the far bank anymore.
I spent 10 mins trying to rescue my pole cup, which I successfully managed to do down in peg 37.
So I had maybe 90 minutes left now I had under 2lb of silvers and 1 carp. Kev on peg 33 was getting the odd fish on the lead and meat cast at the aerator. Peg 32 was getting a few dobbing around the end bank with maggots I think and Mike was getting a few roach. Everyone else were not doing much, some were slowly packing up. It was still raining heavy and the lake was changing colour from the torrent washing in to the lake at peg 40. The water level rose a little.
I came back on to the silvers line after feeding and hooked a carp. I played it ok, got it up then as I grabbed my landing net the handle separated and the 3rd section was the only piece in my had, so I got don on my knees and grabbed the last bit poking out of the water and somehow rejoined the handle back together. The fish had not come off but was a little more spirited, it looked 7lb perhaps.
I got it to the surface again and went to land it and the bugger fell off....!! 2-1 to the carp now.
With 20 mins to go, Steve had left, along with one or 2 others from both lakes.
I did bump a decent fish over the groundbait, not sure what it was. I then had a look across and I think I lost a carp foul hooked, but again it may have been a perch or chub or something.
Last knocking I had a 2lb+ skimmer and Kev on 33 had a carp on the whistle.
The end was called. Yay.
I packed up, decided I was going to weigh in as I had a pants day so at least I want to see what little success I could put on the scales. I followed the scales on a little of the match lake but other than a couple nets around 20lb-22lb there was not much to report until peg 21 gave Giffy the silvers win with 17lb of caster caught fish including tench. Peg 24 gave Jason King 30lb or so.
Speci lake weighed and all to report was Mikes 11lb of roach, loads of little roach from p29. Then 32 and 33 were within 3oz of each other with 34-12 to Will Puddy from peg 32 and 34-15 from peg 33 to Kev Hunt on lead and meat. I weighed my 5-04 carp and 4-03 of silvers. Rob on peg 40 had 19lb.
It was an awful drive home, the roads at time were more like streams at least. My house became a tackle drying zone until yesterday. The joys.
Results:
1st- Kev Hunt, 34-15. Lead/Meat peg 33
2nd - Will Puddy, 34-12. Pole and maggots peg 32
3rd - Jason King, 30-14, Pole and maggots I think, peg 24.
Silvers

So a very tricky day for all and not very enjoyable for most, though I did kind of like it despite the weather and snags etc.
Next up is Landsend Winter League 3rd round, I am on Lake 2 (Match Lake) on Sunday.
Hopefully I will fit a whole load better than what I have been since Monday.

Landsend 'So-Simple Baits' Winter League, Rnd 2. 7-01-18
The second round of this series was last Sunday, and I was kind of looking forward to getting a bash on the Speci Lake (lake 1). I have only fished it a handful of times over the year, but have done ok on a few occasions. The fancied pegs being 31, 32, 33 and 34. But the corners 25 and 40 can be decent. I really didn't fancy the pegs in the middle of the islands.
Anyways I arrived early enough and sorted the trolley out, which is easier said than done now I have a new seatbox. I couldn't get on the bloody thing to sit on the trolley how I wanted it. But I will figure a way to get it right.
A bit of a chat with a couple guys and the draw was started. I was 1st in the pot for my lake for the day....peg 28. Hmm didn't fancy that to be honest and unless the roach had a big munch on then I could definitely struggle. I think it was that peg that Tony Rixon had 20-odd pounds of roach from in the 1st round, but I cannot be sure.
I made my was to my peg and found out that Mr Consistent Gary O'Shea had drawn peg 33....So that looked good for him to get the section win, but he had Matt Williams on 32 opposite him for competition. I had Steve Seagar to my right on peg 31 and Rod Wootton was rather not well down on peg 25. Plenty of room, not always great.
I began to set up and the odd roach was breaking the surface in front of the gap between pegs 29 and 30. So I was a little hopeful of not blanking.
I had a full 16m to the far bank.....I cant remember the last time I got the 16m section out of the bag, but I did for this.
I had for bait, maggots, micros, corn and a few expanders and prawns....oh and some casters and I also mixed up some groundbait.
My rigs were simple:
1st was for silvers, a DT F1 float in 0.2g and hooklength was 0.10>20 b911f1 to be fished to my right at 7m and the same in front.
2nd was a rig for carp and was a DT RBS pattern in 0.3g and would be fished in front at 13m at the bottom of the far shelf, it was also suit 7m off to my left.
Two 0.1g pellet pingers were set-up, one for 16m across in 2ft of water against the island using any bait and the second in 2.5ft around 14.5m distance slightly to my right between 2 trees/bushes. I would feed micros and corn on the 7m line and maggots/casters at 14.5m in case the big perch show (they go well over 3lb here). Both rigs had B911 hooks in size 16 to 0.14 hooklengths.
At the all in I chose not to feed anywhere and started at 7m off to my right tosspotting casters and fishing a single red maggot on the hook. I had 2 baby roach in 2 drops, both fell off.....haha then I managed to put the 3rd in the keepnet, only an ounce, but no blank for me. A couple more followed before bites stopped.....they stayed stopped for a while as the first hour passed with my tally was 5oz...5 roach. Some guys hadn't had a bite. But Matt Williams on corner peg 32 had a couple carp and Gary O'Shea was 'emptying it' by all account.
The second hour saw me catch a few more roach from both silvers lines, I did bump a couple better fish, could have been skimmers, could have been perch, they were not on long enough to tell. But half a dozen roach, all around the 1oz size graced my keepnet. Oh and a single 2oz perch from 14.5m between the trees/bushes.
My few looks for a carp remained fruitless and the roach were not of any size worth catching. Steve Seager had lost 2 or 3 carp and Rod had one from peg 25. It was hard fishing for most. The wind was rather blustery and at times it was hard to fish 7m let along 16m.
I then had 2 hours or so where I think all I caught was 3 or 4 little roach. I was last on the lake, so I thought at this point.
As we came to the last 90 minutes I still had not seen a sign of carp in my peg and Steve was getting a few net silvers and looked well ahead of me. But I began to pick up 1oz roach more quickly now and I was getting into a rhythm and at least putting ounces into the net. I suppose I was on a pound and a half.
I had a couple looks for carp, again nothing. I could hear other saying they had only 3 bites, 4 bites, 2 bites etc.....
As the all out was called I was getting a bite a chuck and even managed a couple 4-6oz roach and a 2oz skimmer. I wanted the match to carry on 20 more minutes as I could have put a couple pounds in the net then. I ended with around 60 fish and had loads of bites, missed plenty though, which given the size of the fish is no shock. Plus the fish were up and down in the water that bites would be hard to spot at times, I tried shallower and laying on etc but could not quite get things sorted.
I reckoned I had 2lb 8oz or so, maybe a little more. But I was sure Steve had well more than me on the silvers front, he had caught a late carp fishing tight over. Rod hadn't had any more, 4 bites he had all day. Others had struggled but most had a carp or 2. So I was really looking at the last place in the section, but I could maybe win the silvers pot for the lake should I have more than Steve. I was sure he had more, he was sure I had more....always the way.
Anyway the scales arrived and Rod's single carp was 5-10, my silvers weighed a surprising 5-08, those odd roach that fell off and occasional bumped fish cost me at least 1 point. I followed the scales to the next peg. Steve Seager had 1 carp, but more importantly to me, his silvers were 4-08 which was a couple pound at least less than what I guessed he had. I then went back to my peg and sorted the rest of my kit out and headed back to the car.
I got hold of the weigh sheet and actually saw my net of roach was the best silvers on the lake, so at least I would get an envelope if not the points I hoped for prior to the match.
Gary O'Shea had done the business from his peg, catching well on maggots suspended mid-depth along the end bank. best part of 90lb was a great days fishing so well done him. The rest of us struggled to get to 70lb between the 8 of us.....!!

So although a hard day, the last hour was rather enjoyable and I was getting bites, which is more that others had during the day. Maybe it was my downfall, maybe I should have sat it out for the whole match for a few carp, but I really was not convinced that I would have any in my peg, let alone expected to hook one. A 6lber would have been worth loads more points.....Hindsight eh!!
No idea where I am fishing this weekend, I don't think I have any matches so a pleasure day at Apex, where I hope to get 15lb+ of skimmers, just for a change, is my likely foray out on the bank.

Anyways I arrived early enough and sorted the trolley out, which is easier said than done now I have a new seatbox. I couldn't get on the bloody thing to sit on the trolley how I wanted it. But I will figure a way to get it right.
A bit of a chat with a couple guys and the draw was started. I was 1st in the pot for my lake for the day....peg 28. Hmm didn't fancy that to be honest and unless the roach had a big munch on then I could definitely struggle. I think it was that peg that Tony Rixon had 20-odd pounds of roach from in the 1st round, but I cannot be sure.
I made my was to my peg and found out that Mr Consistent Gary O'Shea had drawn peg 33....So that looked good for him to get the section win, but he had Matt Williams on 32 opposite him for competition. I had Steve Seagar to my right on peg 31 and Rod Wootton was rather not well down on peg 25. Plenty of room, not always great.
I began to set up and the odd roach was breaking the surface in front of the gap between pegs 29 and 30. So I was a little hopeful of not blanking.

I had for bait, maggots, micros, corn and a few expanders and prawns....oh and some casters and I also mixed up some groundbait.
My rigs were simple:
1st was for silvers, a DT F1 float in 0.2g and hooklength was 0.10>20 b911f1 to be fished to my right at 7m and the same in front.
2nd was a rig for carp and was a DT RBS pattern in 0.3g and would be fished in front at 13m at the bottom of the far shelf, it was also suit 7m off to my left.
Two 0.1g pellet pingers were set-up, one for 16m across in 2ft of water against the island using any bait and the second in 2.5ft around 14.5m distance slightly to my right between 2 trees/bushes. I would feed micros and corn on the 7m line and maggots/casters at 14.5m in case the big perch show (they go well over 3lb here). Both rigs had B911 hooks in size 16 to 0.14 hooklengths.
At the all in I chose not to feed anywhere and started at 7m off to my right tosspotting casters and fishing a single red maggot on the hook. I had 2 baby roach in 2 drops, both fell off.....haha then I managed to put the 3rd in the keepnet, only an ounce, but no blank for me. A couple more followed before bites stopped.....they stayed stopped for a while as the first hour passed with my tally was 5oz...5 roach. Some guys hadn't had a bite. But Matt Williams on corner peg 32 had a couple carp and Gary O'Shea was 'emptying it' by all account.
The second hour saw me catch a few more roach from both silvers lines, I did bump a couple better fish, could have been skimmers, could have been perch, they were not on long enough to tell. But half a dozen roach, all around the 1oz size graced my keepnet. Oh and a single 2oz perch from 14.5m between the trees/bushes.
My few looks for a carp remained fruitless and the roach were not of any size worth catching. Steve Seager had lost 2 or 3 carp and Rod had one from peg 25. It was hard fishing for most. The wind was rather blustery and at times it was hard to fish 7m let along 16m.
I then had 2 hours or so where I think all I caught was 3 or 4 little roach. I was last on the lake, so I thought at this point.
As we came to the last 90 minutes I still had not seen a sign of carp in my peg and Steve was getting a few net silvers and looked well ahead of me. But I began to pick up 1oz roach more quickly now and I was getting into a rhythm and at least putting ounces into the net. I suppose I was on a pound and a half.
I had a couple looks for carp, again nothing. I could hear other saying they had only 3 bites, 4 bites, 2 bites etc.....
As the all out was called I was getting a bite a chuck and even managed a couple 4-6oz roach and a 2oz skimmer. I wanted the match to carry on 20 more minutes as I could have put a couple pounds in the net then. I ended with around 60 fish and had loads of bites, missed plenty though, which given the size of the fish is no shock. Plus the fish were up and down in the water that bites would be hard to spot at times, I tried shallower and laying on etc but could not quite get things sorted.
I reckoned I had 2lb 8oz or so, maybe a little more. But I was sure Steve had well more than me on the silvers front, he had caught a late carp fishing tight over. Rod hadn't had any more, 4 bites he had all day. Others had struggled but most had a carp or 2. So I was really looking at the last place in the section, but I could maybe win the silvers pot for the lake should I have more than Steve. I was sure he had more, he was sure I had more....always the way.
Anyway the scales arrived and Rod's single carp was 5-10, my silvers weighed a surprising 5-08, those odd roach that fell off and occasional bumped fish cost me at least 1 point. I followed the scales to the next peg. Steve Seager had 1 carp, but more importantly to me, his silvers were 4-08 which was a couple pound at least less than what I guessed he had. I then went back to my peg and sorted the rest of my kit out and headed back to the car.
I got hold of the weigh sheet and actually saw my net of roach was the best silvers on the lake, so at least I would get an envelope if not the points I hoped for prior to the match.

Landsend So-Simple Winter League, Round 1. 3-12-17
First up I would like to than Dean at DT Floats for taking me on as a sponsored angler, I appreciate the opportunity. He does a great range of floats, float silicone plus elastics and bait bands. Take a look at the link at the bottom of my page.
The 1st round of my 1st ever attempt at this series. 27 booked on, 9 on each of the 3 lakes, probably a couple short on each but Ken Rayner does his best and there seems to be an abundance of leagues/series' at this time of the year.
I got there in plenty of time, loaded the trolley and had a natter with a few guys. Paid my dues and chatted a little more.
Saturday's match was hard on the Match Lake (lake 2) and the other 2 lakes (Speci/lake 1 and Johns/lake 3) are not overly fished in comparison to lake 2 so were expected to be tricky.
Personally I didn't mind what lake I was on as you fish all 3 twice over the series.
There were a few favoured pegs on each lake, and a few more less-favoured ones, but Ken had done his best to leave out the pegs deemed 'less good'. But whatever match organisers do they never please all of the people any of the time. A generally thank-less task.
Anyways on to the draw and I went in the queue mid-way and plucked peg 51 on Lake 3. Mr Rixon said it was ok but pegs 41, 42, 68 and 70, plus 58 were deemed as the best 5 pegs in the draw.
I made my way to the lake with Matt Williams, he had drawn 66 which is average I thought.
I didn't really have any company, with only the un-flappable Ade Crawley opposite me within talking range Martin Pettifer on peg 46 and Rod Wootton almost pleasure fishing on peg 58 were my 'neighbours'.
4 rigs assembled. The swim was pretty much the same depth give or take a couple inches, it was around 2.5ft deep.
The first was my general silvers rig using a DT F1/Silvers in 0.3g, 0.10 hooklength and a 20 hook. 2 spots were plumbed for this rig, topkit and at 11m slightly to my right between the gap in the islands.
Then I had a DT pellet pinger in 0.1g for across towards the island in 2 areas, maggots over maggots off the point of the island and at 14m in the 10 o'clock direction feeding micros there. This rig would couple up down to my left, but I would be using maggots over maggot here late on in the day.
Then I had a standard meat rig for 2+2 in front and to my right at the bottom of the nearside shelf. The float was an RBS open water in 0.4g.
Lastly an identical rig as the meat was set up and fished off a tree/bush in the water at 13m in front for fishing any bait over casters and dead maggots (perch were my ideal target).
The so-called carp rigs had 0.14 hooklengths and size 16 hooks. If I hook one I don't want to lose it, lol.
A quick walk before the match and I had to think Rod on 58 would win the lake, the water looked a better colour and I had seen a few fish up there on arrival at my peg. The 'better' pegs at the near end looked a little less fishy.
Back at my peg, a quick cuppa before the all in. I potted a little groundbait on both silvers lines and started off to the left over toss potted micros, 5 minutes no bites.
Off to the point of the island, toss-potted maggots, bite 1st drop, I think it was a little roach as it fell off on the strike. Next drop I had a roach of 1oz. Blank avoided. 15 minutes or so later I was back over the micros fed via the toss-pot and I spied a stray rig mooching around the area and typically as I looked across at Ade I felt the pole pull, a carp was attached, it didn't feel right and it was either foul hooked or the rig on my pole had caught the 'roaming' rig. Either way the fish charged up the lake to my left and soon enough the hook pulled. Still positive signs.
Sadly that was the total action for the first hour.
Into the second sixty minutes and I caught my only fish on the topkit line, a 1/4oz perch.
Back out to the point of the island and I was soon attached to a carp, this one was netted and was about 4lb so a relatively small one for the lake. Some roach, micro roach mostly, followed so I started to switch lines to find a better stamp of fish of any species.
Elsewhere Rod up on 58 had a couple carp and some skimmers. Ade had a nice perch and some little roach. It sounded like no-one was getting anything of note further down the lake. One or 2 were still bite less.
Hour 3 began ok as I had started to dump-feed maggots off the point of the island and I was getting a better stamp of roach, to around 6oz and was enjoying it, but I knew I needed a few carp.
I tried the meat line, no bites, actually I didn't have any bites on the meat all day.
Over the silvers groundbait at 11m gave me a few roach and a single 2oz skimmer but it didn't feel like it would give up much so that line was binned.
Over to the micros line and I had a roach on expander and then I managed a nice skimmer of 12oz from that spot. No more followed.
A look by the bush for an expected perch only saw me land my 2nd carp, a 3lb fish. Also a roach and a rudd followed.
A dead spell followed, other than a couple little roach and we were soon into the last 45 minutes.
It looked like Rod would win the lake and I reckoned on him having near 40lb at this point. Elsewhere it was only 1 carp, foul hooked and landed by Martin Rayet on p68 that had been caught, but that 1 could be bigger than my 2 very easily on this lake and if anyone was going to start catching then now would be that point.
I had been feeding a few maggots down to my left and decided to drop in here and had a bite right away, micro roach and a couple 2oz roach were swung in, but I was getting a few liners so I came away and kept feeding while I tried over the micros. Thankfully a skimmer of 1lb or so was put into the keepnet. So I thought I had maybe 4.5lb of silvers and my 2 carp.
One or 2 roach from the point of the island followed but no more signs of carp.
10 minutes left and a look down the edge and the float shot under, 3oz of roach into the net. The next drop saw the float sail away and I was attached to a carp, another small one netted, 3lb, but they scraped well. The all out followed minutes later. 15lb was my guess on weight, I did not expect much from that but I knew I had more than Ade and Martin. I couldn't be sure on the rest.
I packed up rather quickly and went for a wander around the lake and it seemed my 15lb would be 2nd on the lake by all accounts, but lets see. I followed Steve Seager and Tom Mangnall do the 3 pegs up to me and weights were 2lb 6oz (inc 1 carp), 1-12, 1-05 before I had 5-07 of silvers then 10-08 was my 3 carp weight for a 15lb 15oz total.
I finished packing up and the scales kept on their way.
I caught up with scales at peg 68, Martin Rayet's carp was 7-00 and he had 2lb of silvers. A look at the sheet saw Rod had 50lb, Ade weighed in 1-08, Matt 2-12. Last to weigh was Mr Consistent Gary O'Shea on decent peg 70. He also struggled. But he just pipped my 5-07 of silvers with 5-12 worth which was 4th on the lake itself.
So only 11 carp (6 to Rod, 3 to me, 1 to Steve Seager and Martin's single one) were caught. It was hard. I picked up the money for 2nd on the lake (section) and a decent start to the series.

Landsend Lakes 1 + 2, Matt Culpin's Series, 5-11-17
A chance to cover came up for this round of Matt Culipin's series, he has ran over the last couple of months and as seems to be the case there have been no-shows and anglers unable to fish the rounds for various reasons.
So I duly accepted my invitation, purely because I haven't fished for carp for what seems like months and fancied a change.
Down to the fishery in plenty of time, chatted to a few people I hadn't seen for a while.
I didn't mind where I drew, but to be honest if I had to be pushed then 31 round to 33 on Lake 1 may have been my choice as I could have tried to catch some perch....failing that pegs 11, 13, and 15 up at the far end of Lake 2 would be a better pick on that lake, but I wasn't too fussed to be fair.
We had seen loads of overnight hail showers and there was likely to have been a fair amount of cold water going into the lakes, so I was not expecting a baggin session on anyone's part, certainly it would be harder than usual no doubt.
Into the draw about 5th in line and I plucked peg 19 on Lake 2, a decent enough peg, but the cold north/north-westerly wind would be cutting through the gap in the islands and right in my chops. But I was pleased enough with the peg.
Steve Howell was on peg 11, Mark Thorne on peg 13 and Adrian Jeffery on peg 15 would be on the favoured pegs, peg 11 had won the Saturday open.
Bait for the day was live maggots, some girly 6mm meat, a few wetted micros and some expander pellets. I had mixed a little So Simple BMG groundbait just incase the skimmers/roach were my option of a few bites.
Rigs for the day were a silvers rig, a small DT F1/Silvers float to fish in front at 2+2. A meat rig to fish slightly to the right at the same distance using a 0.3g DT RBS open water float, this rig was also suitable down to my left beside the tree that is in the water.
Lastly I set up a DT Pellet Pinger float in 0.1g for fishing at 14m to the left edge of some reeds where I found slightly deeper water. This rig also covered an area off to the right at the same distance but involved moving the float shallower by 6 inches. Mike Duckett said there was a nice area to fish there using 8mm pellets, maybe 6''s.
The carp rigs were on 0.14 hooklengths as the water still looked like it was not too clear, KND white laccy was used. The silvers was my usual 0.10 hooklength and middy solid 5-8 elastic.
At the all-in I popped a small ball of groundbait at 2+2 and maybe 20 pieces of meat went in over that area. I would feed to my left by the tree with maggots in small amounts during the day.
I began over to the left of the reeds using a 4mm expander on the hook and a small amount of loose fed micros.
It took maybe 5 minutes for my 1st indication which I missed, but duly dropped back in and was into a carp, foul hooked and soon came off. A few minutes later I repeated the process as another foul hooked fish was lost, I shallowed up a few inches and indications stopped.
Then I did manage to foul hook a couple more before landing one hooked fairly, a nice ghostie looking carp of around 6lb. I hadn't seen anyone else have a fish yet, some had not even had a bite after an hour.
We were soon an hour into the match and my indications had stopped across so I came and looked on the silvers line, a couple roach and a couple micro perch were put in the net but bites dried up rapidly. Another small ball of groundbait went in there and it was back across.
2 more carp were landed in short time, one of 8lb on maggots and the other perhaps 5lb on expander. But I was not getting the signs of fish in the area I was in the previous hour.
Things went dead then.....no signs from anything, people were struggling, though I could occasionally see Adrian's elastic being worked.
Jon Page down on peg 21 had landed his first carp down his right edge, I had not bothered with my right side as there was one or 2 overhanging branches that hindered my view.
It was soon the halfway stage of the match and I was on 3 carp, a couple roach and a couple perch.
I decided to put 3/4 of a cup of micros on the 14m area off to the right and leave it, hoping something would settle over the top. I gave this a 20 minute rest before trying it and would you believe it when in had a bite 1st put, a smallish F1 was landed then a foul hooked carp was lost, then one of about 10lb landed. Nice.
Back to the left hand side of the reeds and a couple roach were landed, this told me that the carp were not here.
Another couple hours passed and it was maybe 45 minutes until the end of the match. The tree swim had yet to give me a bite, it never actually did. A couple looks over the meat line saw the float stationary. And the silvers line gave me 1 more roach before the all-out.
JP on peg 21 was up to 3 carp and peg 24 had 1 on the lead earlier in the day and had since got a few from his left margin. He was on 4 or 5 carp but they can be smaller in that corner at times.
I went back over the 14m line to the right and managed a 2lb skimmer that fought like mad, lost another foul hooked carp and netted a nice 8oz skimmer.
Around 20 minutes to go and I saw a couple bubbles over the meat and I dropped in there and was soon attached to a carp, which was netted and probably 7lb. Back in and I missed a bite, but hooked and landed another, 10lber perhaps. With perhaps 5 minutes to go I hooked my 3rd meat fish, landed it after a nice scrap and it too was possibly 10lb. I hoped to get one more before the all-out and promptly missed a bite a few seconds before the whistle.
So the match ended with peg 24 having 6 carp, Jon had 3, I had 6 and from what I could hear 11, 13 and 15 all had a few fish, not loads though.
My clicker showed 36lb but I hadn't clicked the last carp. I also had 4lb of silvers (1x F1, 2x skimmers, 2x micro perch and 8 roach).
I packed up as the rain began, typically it was the heaviest rain of the day.
I caught up with the weigh-in at peg 11 and Steve Howell. He had 11lb of silvers and some carp to give him 50lb and ounces. Mark Thorne had around 48lb and Adrian had 39lb. Peg 17 don't weigh too much, I didn't catch his weight.

There was a couple 30lb+ nets I think and Ron Stark had 11lb 14oz of silvers to pip Steve Howell by a solitary ounce to win that pot. I had top weight off Lake 2 and picked up 2nd overall, winning the section money.

So I duly accepted my invitation, purely because I haven't fished for carp for what seems like months and fancied a change.
Down to the fishery in plenty of time, chatted to a few people I hadn't seen for a while.
I didn't mind where I drew, but to be honest if I had to be pushed then 31 round to 33 on Lake 1 may have been my choice as I could have tried to catch some perch....failing that pegs 11, 13, and 15 up at the far end of Lake 2 would be a better pick on that lake, but I wasn't too fussed to be fair.
We had seen loads of overnight hail showers and there was likely to have been a fair amount of cold water going into the lakes, so I was not expecting a baggin session on anyone's part, certainly it would be harder than usual no doubt.
Into the draw about 5th in line and I plucked peg 19 on Lake 2, a decent enough peg, but the cold north/north-westerly wind would be cutting through the gap in the islands and right in my chops. But I was pleased enough with the peg.
Steve Howell was on peg 11, Mark Thorne on peg 13 and Adrian Jeffery on peg 15 would be on the favoured pegs, peg 11 had won the Saturday open.

Rigs for the day were a silvers rig, a small DT F1/Silvers float to fish in front at 2+2. A meat rig to fish slightly to the right at the same distance using a 0.3g DT RBS open water float, this rig was also suitable down to my left beside the tree that is in the water.
Lastly I set up a DT Pellet Pinger float in 0.1g for fishing at 14m to the left edge of some reeds where I found slightly deeper water. This rig also covered an area off to the right at the same distance but involved moving the float shallower by 6 inches. Mike Duckett said there was a nice area to fish there using 8mm pellets, maybe 6''s.
The carp rigs were on 0.14 hooklengths as the water still looked like it was not too clear, KND white laccy was used. The silvers was my usual 0.10 hooklength and middy solid 5-8 elastic.
At the all-in I popped a small ball of groundbait at 2+2 and maybe 20 pieces of meat went in over that area. I would feed to my left by the tree with maggots in small amounts during the day.
I began over to the left of the reeds using a 4mm expander on the hook and a small amount of loose fed micros.
It took maybe 5 minutes for my 1st indication which I missed, but duly dropped back in and was into a carp, foul hooked and soon came off. A few minutes later I repeated the process as another foul hooked fish was lost, I shallowed up a few inches and indications stopped.
Then I did manage to foul hook a couple more before landing one hooked fairly, a nice ghostie looking carp of around 6lb. I hadn't seen anyone else have a fish yet, some had not even had a bite after an hour.
We were soon an hour into the match and my indications had stopped across so I came and looked on the silvers line, a couple roach and a couple micro perch were put in the net but bites dried up rapidly. Another small ball of groundbait went in there and it was back across.
2 more carp were landed in short time, one of 8lb on maggots and the other perhaps 5lb on expander. But I was not getting the signs of fish in the area I was in the previous hour.
Things went dead then.....no signs from anything, people were struggling, though I could occasionally see Adrian's elastic being worked.
Jon Page down on peg 21 had landed his first carp down his right edge, I had not bothered with my right side as there was one or 2 overhanging branches that hindered my view.
It was soon the halfway stage of the match and I was on 3 carp, a couple roach and a couple perch.
I decided to put 3/4 of a cup of micros on the 14m area off to the right and leave it, hoping something would settle over the top. I gave this a 20 minute rest before trying it and would you believe it when in had a bite 1st put, a smallish F1 was landed then a foul hooked carp was lost, then one of about 10lb landed. Nice.
Back to the left hand side of the reeds and a couple roach were landed, this told me that the carp were not here.
Another couple hours passed and it was maybe 45 minutes until the end of the match. The tree swim had yet to give me a bite, it never actually did. A couple looks over the meat line saw the float stationary. And the silvers line gave me 1 more roach before the all-out.
JP on peg 21 was up to 3 carp and peg 24 had 1 on the lead earlier in the day and had since got a few from his left margin. He was on 4 or 5 carp but they can be smaller in that corner at times.
I went back over the 14m line to the right and managed a 2lb skimmer that fought like mad, lost another foul hooked carp and netted a nice 8oz skimmer.
Around 20 minutes to go and I saw a couple bubbles over the meat and I dropped in there and was soon attached to a carp, which was netted and probably 7lb. Back in and I missed a bite, but hooked and landed another, 10lber perhaps. With perhaps 5 minutes to go I hooked my 3rd meat fish, landed it after a nice scrap and it too was possibly 10lb. I hoped to get one more before the all-out and promptly missed a bite a few seconds before the whistle.
So the match ended with peg 24 having 6 carp, Jon had 3, I had 6 and from what I could hear 11, 13 and 15 all had a few fish, not loads though.
My clicker showed 36lb but I hadn't clicked the last carp. I also had 4lb of silvers (1x F1, 2x skimmers, 2x micro perch and 8 roach).
I packed up as the rain began, typically it was the heaviest rain of the day.
I caught up with the weigh-in at peg 11 and Steve Howell. He had 11lb of silvers and some carp to give him 50lb and ounces. Mark Thorne had around 48lb and Adrian had 39lb. Peg 17 don't weigh too much, I didn't catch his weight.

Pawlett Match, Landsend Fishery, Lakes 2 and 3. 23rd July 2017
Well a short blog about Sunday's match, I think. But 1st I went to Summerhayes to practice paste fishing on Saturday and had a boat-load of fish, which was a bit of fun.
Anyway to Sunday. The day started fine, arrived early enough and chattered to a few people and paid my dues.
Trolley loaded and draw underway, 4 golden pegs fell with 2 on each of the lakes. I wanted to be on the Match Lake (lake 2), but there was a few 'short walks' which took up a good few of the pegs on the lake I wanted, ho hum.
So into the bucket and peg 65 was set to be my location for the day, I hate that peg with a passion, and really contemplated putting the kit back in the car. But I made the walk up to the peg, and the rain started....I arrived and just sat and stared at the water, there was a few fish mulling around, there always is in this peg. But the reeds on the right hand side of the peg are a nightmare. 15 minutes later and I was still sat debating if to bother, but I did bother. The rain was set in and mood wasn't bright.
4 rigs set up, a shallow pellet rig for across to the island (and anywhere I could try and mug fish), a deep pellet rig for tight to the island, where I had 2.5ft, pretty much the same as all over the peg.
A meat rig for next to the reeds and a paste rig for down the middle.
The match began and after 30 mins I had bumped a couple fish and lost a couple foul hooked carp.
My 1st fish came after an hour, a 1lb F1, soon followed by it's twin.
The next 5 hours were less than great, I landed a small 2lb carp from against the island but every carp I hooked across would take me around the reed bed and it would be game over. I tried heavy gear, light gear, shipping back quick and even trying to play them in open water, but they were not having it and would inevitably find their reed-bed-sanctuary. Even those I hooked on the furthest part of my peg to my left away from them.
Nobody, well except Neil Venning and Eric Fouracre were catching much in the scheme of things, just odd carp really.
I was getting annoyed as hell, trashing rigs and cursing the fish, the shallow water definitely put the turbo-boost into the fish. I even managed to destroy a number 4 section, ah well....
In the end I resorted to fishing topkit to my right with no.20 laccy wrapped around my hand in the hope no elastic would come out on the strike, well there were not really any strikes just thte float was there, then the elastic was in the reeds, nothing in-between.
I ended up on 0.24>0.22>14 b911x in the hope to get some fish out, well I lost maybe 25 during the day but landed 5 or 6, plus my 2 F1s for 23lb.
Luckily my DT Floats pretty much stood up to the challenge and although I had to bin them after the match, they stood up to the abuse very well indeed with each fish getting in to the reeds.
Coupled with the all day rain we had, it wasn't an enjoyable day.
I wasn't last on the lake, there were a few dnw's and a few lower nets weighed in off Lake 3, but it was Neil (p62), Eric (p61 I think) and Jamie Cook on peg 70 that caught well enough. Lake 2, the Match Lake had apparently fished better with a few 100lb nets I believe, but cannot be sure as I had gone home by the time they had started to weigh that lake. Not sure of the results.
Not sure where I am fishing next, I have Pawlett's Silvers Winners Final on Durleigh in a couple weeks, but this weekend? No idea....

A catch-up from my last post until last weekend.
The 25th of June saw the penultimate round of the Acorn Saturday Series, again I fancied a draw up towards the near end, that of the building work and entrance, but alas I picked peg 26. Paul Nichols won the section from this peg in the last round, but this match returned to the norm.
Pegs 28 and 31 were not in and I am convinced that this played a part in my match.
5 fish in the first 30-45 minutes had a nice beginning, there were plenty of fish in the area at the start and during this spell I could see them back off to the ample space, where they remained for the rest of the day.
Brian on peg 24 picked off a few more than me, well plenty more, especially later on in the match.
I ended up with 38lb something and 5th in section.
The following week I took a last minute decision to fish Norm Sterry's open at Landsend. I only decided to as I didn't fancy being bored at home, but despite an ok draw in peg 16 I wasn't feeling enthusiastic, I had decent company on a better peg in Ken Rayner on peg 15.
I started off ok catching a few across early on, but the day proved frustrating for most, myself included. Ken caught naff all for around 4hrs and then he caught well late on to finish 4th I think.
I caught a couple skimmers and a couple late carp on my short meat line, but the middle 5hrs wasn't great and I think I ended up better than a few, but not as good as a few with about 40-something pounds if I remember rightly. My 6lb of silvers was just out of the silvers money.
The lack of effort in not getting the 16m section of the pole out definitely cost me some fish.
Norm won the match with around 97lb from peg 7.
On the 8th of July I had an afternoon over Apex, trying to catch some silvers, mostly skimmers and odd bream. I started ok with a couple, then it went quiet before I started to catch some quality roach shallow on pellet at 13m. The sun made seeing the float tricky so I came short and caught a good few bream to 7lb (which went off jumping like a dolphin), but good sport on 4-6 elastics. I think I ended up with perhaps 14 3lb+ bream, a comfortable 15lb+ of roach/rudd and lost a few carp. Enjoyable.
The following day I was on the Canal Lake at Sedges, 23 fishing, so it was going to be hard fishing. So it proved. I pulled peg 61, not the worst but away from where I fancied, 64 and 41-46.
I had 2 carp hooked in the first minute, mugged, one came off after a couple moments, the 2nd fell off at the net.
I ended the day with a few silvers (2lb-ish) and only 4 small carp for a total of just under 15lb, which was ok on the day with lots of DNW's and low weights.
Peg 64, Rob Dodd, won, as expected, with 58lb. He caught to the point of the island and down to the end bank. The pegs in the 40's did well, relatively speaking. Kev Crouch and Nick Selway coming 2nd and 3rd with 32lb and 25lb respectively. 6lb was top silvers net. So not brilliant, but it is a challenging water at times. Plenty of fish in the lake.
Now that brings me up to last weekend, 15th and 16th of July.
Saturday saw the final round of the Acorn series and I had nothing to play for overall, so it was the £80 section winning prize I had to fish for. Again I hoped for a draw at the entrance end of the lake. I went in to the bucket 2nd last, well Steve Sewell and I had the last 2 balls, the pegs left were peg 5(yes please...) and 31 (ok peg but in with the 6 bridge pegs and hasn't been great for section points).
Well I didn't get what I hoped and big Steve sat on peg 5.
I had the wife with me for company, but the weather was dire, constant heavy drizzle all day, we never bought a brolly for her (ah well....) but she had my water proofs and a little brolly. I just sat in my shorts and sandals, haha. My maggots did Houdini acts all day and my the end of the day my pellets were mush.
Still, before the match started Gabe decided he didn't want to fish his peg 26 and left, but in the process scratched his new van on some metal while reversing to let me through.
A few rigs set up, tight over pellet which would couple up as a shallow rig for down the middle, a banded pellet rig for full depth around 1m off the far bank (unused), a rig for maggot/caster at 2+2 in the 10 o'clock direction. This rig would do for corn over micros at the same distance in the 1 o'clock direction. A shallow maggot/caster rig and lastly a rig for maggots or corn down the edges both left and right.
There was plenty of fish mooching around all over the lake, including between me and Ricky Mills on peg 28. But as expected it was a tricky day. I caught a couple f1's early, lost 3 foul hooked fish when fishing across, so abandoned that. Nobody, except Barry Richards on peg 24, seemed to be catching much including Nick Harvey and Glen Calvert on the bridge pegs to my left.
As the day went on I struggled a little more, caught a few small, well baby, carp and some silvers down the middle on maggot.
4pm came and I had my 1st 'proper' carp and signalled the start of a few bites, well that's what I hoped. At this point I was last in the section. There were fish in the peg, even shallow on the caster and maggot line, but I never bought enough caster to make it work properly. I managed one shallow, but didn't persevere with it as I would have ran out of bait. I then had one on the corn over the micros, but that was the only fish from there all day. So I was left with the edges, I had a topkit line each side and another line at 8m each side, luckily I managed to figure something out that avoided the foul hookers a little more and caught steadily for the last 90 minutes, but at the all out was sure I would be near last in section. My clicker said 48lb (which I thought was 35lb) plus I had maybe 5lb in my other net (silvers, baby carp and f1s) but I try to over click at Acorn due to the 70lb limit which if you go over you lose the lot, no leeway.
I guessed Barry had won as he'd caught all day, I thought Nick and Glen must have 60lb each and even Ade Crawley on peg 22 had caught some fish.
I packed up with the help of the chicken-whisperer behind me, and followed the scales.
There were some 30-50lb nets and a couple 70's and a couple 80lb nets from the straight bank before Barry put 150lb on the sheet to confirm his series win in style, 4 section wins (including 3 match wins I think) and a section 2nd, which was his dropper.
Ricky didn't weigh before I plopped 58lb on the scales, plenty more than I thought, but presumed Nick and Glen had more, but they both weighed around the 50lb mark which, if Keith Ray on peg 40 had what he said was 35lb then I would win the section. Which was confirmed a few minutes later.
So at least I picked up another £80.
So a decent 1st round, an ok second round, 3 crap rounds and draws, last round was decent. I think I ended up with 19.5 points and probably in the top half of the field.
Barry won the series, I believe Paul Nichols was 2nd in the series. But I have not seen the results in full yet. They'll appear somewhere asap.
It was a well run series, thanks to Paul and Brian.
This Sunday sees me at Landsend on lakes 2 and 3, with the Pawlett group, I think I want Lake 2 as Lake 3 fished hard in Tony Rixon's Float only match on Sunday last.
I may go somewhere Saturday, Landsend or Todber? I defo want to get down to the Dorset fishery soon. Cracking venue.

So at least I picked up another £80.
So a decent 1st round, an ok second round, 3 crap rounds and draws, last round was decent. I think I ended up with 19.5 points and probably in the top half of the field.
Barry won the series, I believe Paul Nichols was 2nd in the series. But I have not seen the results in full yet. They'll appear somewhere asap.
It was a well run series, thanks to Paul and Brian.
This Sunday sees me at Landsend on lakes 2 and 3, with the Pawlett group, I think I want Lake 2 as Lake 3 fished hard in Tony Rixon's Float only match on Sunday last.
I may go somewhere Saturday, Landsend or Todber? I defo want to get down to the Dorset fishery soon. Cracking venue.
